Some font families are bigger than others. A basic font family usually includes a 'Regular' version. This is the basic, original typeface. It is sometimes also named 'Roman' or 'Book,' depending on the typeface and its creator(s). A basic family usually also includes a bold face that appears darker than the regular, an italic face that leans forward and is often more ornate in nature, and finally a bold italic. Those are the basic four, included in most professionally produced typefaces. Some professional typefaces do not include all four. Some nonprofessional typefaces include many more than those. So, why are there so many different versions of Helvetica Neue? There are two important dimensions across the Helvetica Neue font family: Weight and width. Weight refers to how dark it appears on the page/screen. The above example does a good job of showing how the typeface appears darker as you go down to heavier weights (except for a couple that seem out of order). Some common weight names across font families are: • Light • Thin • Regular • Medium • Bold • Black Width refers to the horizontal dimension of the characters. You generally have a normal, unnamed width, usually the width of the original characters. Then a typeface may be widened and is usually labeled as 'extended' or it can be skinnier and that is usually labeled 'condensed.' You can see the variations in a line of text. Helvetica Neue LT LT 55 Roman. Helvetica Neue LT LT 75., helvetica neue. Your fonts have been old T1 fonts which are not supported anymore. Instead you can choose a bold that's not quite so dark, or an even darker bold. Designers generally like a limited number of typefaces to avoid a lot of visual noise, but also need variety in a single typeface to create and maintain visual hierarchy. In the following example, (1) lacks hierarchy, (2) creates it simply by making the heading bold. So, why are some typefaces available in so many varieties? ![]() It allows the designer more freedom to make decisions. A secondary aspect of that 'why' would be the popularity of a given typeface. Generally, if professionals like using that typeface, then type foundries tend to make them in a wide variety to serve designers who want more freedom in their design decisions. Which font(s) you choose for your design work is up to you, but if you just want the basics of Helvetica Neue, I would suggest: • 55 Roman (The basic) • 56 Italic • 75 Bold • 76 Bold Italic. The answer to which font style of Neue Helvetica to use in a design hints at the answer to why there are so many styles in the family.
